You are such a daredevil! What bravery to brazenly go to a movie theater without fully researching what’s available first. I can’t do that. I need to mentally prepare to receive the content in advance. But to ensure the reception will be a positive experience I agonize over the options until all the available times of the movies have passed for that day. The sun has set on the opportunity so I go to bed with the intent to rise from the ashes in the morning and try again.
I relate to this SO HARD. I too grew up with movies. Recorded off cable onto VHS tapes that I would re-watch over and over and over again. My parents divorced when I was five and I saw my dad every Sunday and what would we do? Go to the movies. I saw EVERYTHING. I threw an Oscar party every year from age 21 to 38. But now? The Oscar noms came out and I've only seen The Wild Robot and Inside Out 2 and Wicked because I have a 10 year old kid, so I only see movies I watch with her. I have a never ending list of movies I want to watch and then I never do. Everything is too long (bring back the 90 minute perfect film) or too depressing (I need happy endings). But I do miss it. I miss film.
We’re “unlimited” members at our local theater. It definitely takes a lot of the pressure off of finding the “right” movie to watch. We even did a “Mystery Monday Movie” recently. We felt like god damned Lewis and Clark pioneering into new territory. We seriously felt smug when we came out of the theater.
I loved reading this. Something about the way you write pulled me in but it’s not even a subject I’d normally read about.
“It was the closest thing to actually hunting your own movies like our ancestors used to do.” - so good. We forget how hard it was for our ancestors to watch movies and how they accepted whatever they caught gratefully as it was life or death for them.
I feel exactly the same but more so with reading than movies.
I know this is humor, but have you heard of The Paradox of Choice? There's a great TED Talk from Barry Schwartz about the fact that the more options you have, the less good you feel about the decision. Anyway - I'm rooting for the two of you to make a go of it again. ;-)
Future Shock ( the book comes to mind) read that book at 14 and thought.. oh my.. How will I survive … did not know why that would affect me.. oh.. the choices..and this writing here is priceless.. yes, now that I am much older.. I finally get to movie watch.. and on a big screen tv..amazing how the movies are made..always fascinated me..
I miss Blockbuster. It was so fun and I sort of think it needs to come back.
Fun fact. My cousin is the young blonde girl in Jurassic Park. During filming a Cat 5 hurricane hit the islands and it stalled filming but Spielberg (I’m guessing he gets credit) decided to pivot and use some of the storm in the footage, hence the wild stormy Jeep scenes trying to get the contraband specimen to the ship.
You have been on my mind this past week, after your last post, wondering how you have been doing. A movie, IN THE THEATER (!), might be just what you need. My ex and I used to go for a whole day at a time. I can't imagine doing that now. Maybe if I could take my dog.....
Next time try adding nonpareils to your hot popcorn and shake it up to mix them in. Your movie might be just a teeeny bit better.. I don't go out to movies any more because I just don't like people any more... Not good I know. But I'm here in my LR with my TV and phone and making the most of it. :D
You are such a delight to read. YOU are helping me get through the apocalypse. Also, as an erstwhile screenwriter, I'm pretty sure this is the best description of every erstwhile screenwriter ever written: "When I got a little older, I even moved out to California just to be with movies. It was fun for a while, but we just couldn’t make it work. Don’t get me wrong, we were pretty good together, but in the end, we just wanted different things. For instance, I wanted to make enough money to be able to feed myself every day, and movies wanted me to be unemployed and sad. And that’s all I’m gonna say here about my time as a screenwriter." Also the "it's got that covered" from this is pure gold: "That’s only made the rest of my time, when the world has its spindly little fingers wrapped around my neck, just that much more difficult to navigate. And let’s be real, the world doesn’t need any help in that arena right now. It’s got that covered." Thank you for being here. Thank you for being a great writer and sharing that with us. Thank you for being hilarious.
Did you ever have the blockbuster pass? It was like $14.99/month and you could rent unlimited movies. It was their desperate attempt to hold on and it was glorious for all who partook. Also, moviepass had a great little half year run.
Movies have been my life for as long as I can remember. Living near L A., my kids grew up with everything Hollywood had to offer. They even worked at the local theater when they were teenagers, cleaning out the nasty goo from the popcorn machines. We all have a million movie quotes embedded in our brains, and we can have an entire conversation using nothing but quotes.
I just took my kids to a movie theater a few weeks ago. We hadn't been in a really long time. And, it was such a fun night. The popcorn, the previews, the spilling of the drink by a child...it was all as good as it was when I was a kid.
Ah, another relatable post. My partner and I are going to the movies several times a month now since movies are an experience, not just the film itself. Nicole Kidman is right about that. 😄
Scrolling through Amazon and ending up on my phone might be the truth. Idk. 🤣🤣🤣

Because of your spontaneity, you are my hero 🌷👏👏👏

How do you feel about Bollywood? "Marigold" and "Bride and Prejudice" are a couple of my favorites.
